Loren is an architectural designer and an artist. He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (Boston University) and a master’s degree in architecture (Rhode Island School of Design). His pursuits have always been driven by the desire to understand the environment around him. Initially, it was physical phenomena that intrigued him, how a wing experiences lift or a stone vault resolves gravity. Later, emotive forces became an equal focus. How can two works of similar function elicit unique responses of joy, comfort, hostility or fear? What builds the relationship between subject and surrounding? What role does space play in the relationship between two inhabitants? The conceptual framework of an art-based architectural education, specifically the practice of dropping preconceptions in order to pierce through opacities, learning to see, has been critical to Loren’s practice, in art, design, and education.
